Good Trouble and Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights Donation

Good Trouble: More Than Just a Day and a Call to Action was the theme for World of Wellesley’s 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luither King, Jr. celebration on January 18, 2021. The virtual celebration was planned by a multi-racial and multi-generational committee and included events for all age groups. The kick-off to the event was a virtual breakfast which consisted of music, a brief presentation about the life and legacy of Dr. King, and reflection on an excerpt from Dr. King’s speech “The Other America.” The highlight of the event were the breakout groups, many of which were skillfully facilitated by Wellesley High School students.

We are very appreciative of all the hard work of the planning committee members, but are especially grateful for the bold leadership of our high school student facilitators for both the breakfast and high school event. They truly modeled how to lead courageous conversations where race and racism were the focus of the conversation.

World of Wellesley made a plea to the community to engage in “good trouble” and to “take action.” One such action was to make a voluntary donation to the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. They are committed to providing “a unique range of resources and representation that help to advance the cause of equal justice under law.” We thank our supporters who responded to that call, and are proud to report that a donation of $1,160.31, was sent earlier this month.

We are proud of the format and success of this year’s event and are looking forward to the 22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther, Jr. event. WOW is hoping that more citizens and organizations in our community will collaborate with us to expand on this model.

Please share your “good trouble’ with us. Also, let us know if you want to be involved, have feedback on the event or if you have ideas you want to share for next year by contacting Christina Horner at chorner@worldofwellelsey.org.
